If you are going for the first time to perform Umrah probably, you are not the only one who is confused about the dress code (Ihram) in Makkah and Madinah. Many Umrah pilgrims ask questions like, what should women wear for Umrah, or what is Ihram for women? What footwear should we use in masjid–al–haram? Here we will guide you entirely about the dress code whether you are a man or a woman.
What to wear for Umrah’s trip starts when you will cross Meeqat. There are a total of 5 meeqats for all upcoming Pilgrims from all around the world. But if you are living in Makkah and have the intention to perform Umrah then there are 3 nearest Meeqats for wearing your Ihram for Umrah as Ayesha Mosque, Jaranah Mosque, and Hudaybiyah Mosque.
Most Muslims choose to wear ihram at home instead of aeroplanes or airports. Ihram is not a clothing pattern, but it is sacred which you must enter to perform Umrah. Before entering the state of Ihram, taking a proper bath (Ghusal), wearing Ihram cloth in a prescribed way, and making an intention for Ihram are all essentials.
Suppose you forgot to bring another Ihram with your luggage and your first Ihram has become dirty there for any reason. It may be possible you think in such a situation; Washing Ihram with washing powder is permissible or not.”
Because using any scent is not permissible in the state of Ihram, so you can get your answer after studying it “Can You Wash Ihram With Washing Powder?”
Ihram for Men
Ihram for men derived from the light of hadiths of our Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) consists of two white unstitched cotton sheets. One is called Izar, which is used to cover the lower part of the body. The second one is known as Rida, which is used to cover the upper part of the body. Men can’t wear socks and underwear along Ihram. You can’t cover your head and can’t wear stitched clothes while performing Umrah.
While wearing ihram, your right shoulder should be naked, and your Izar must be tightened with a belt. While choosing ihram, keep in mind that it should not be transparent and long enough to cover your body easily.
Ihram is the first step of Umrah. If you do not do it properly, your Umrah will end as soon as the journey begins. No one likes it, so you should study “How to wear ihram for Hajj and Umrah“.
Footwear for Men during Umrah
Whatever you’re going to wear, should be the same size as your sole, don’t cover the upper part of your foot, and leave your ankles naked. So, sandals are the best that fulfils all the requirements. You can wear them while performing tawaf.
As the holy prophet (P.B.U.H) said: “Give one of you a chance to enter ihram wearing an izaar, Rida’ and sandals“. Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (8/500); classed as Saheeh by Ibn Khuzaymah (2601).
Ihram for women
A woman can wear their regular clothes with a white or black abaya. Your abaya should be loose and extended so that it doesn’t expose your body. Saudi Arabia is very hot in climate nature, so if you are going in the middle of the year, your abaya must be thick to cover your body.
Women must cover their heads with a scarf. They can also wear socks, but in Masjid-al-Haram you can’t cover your face and hands. There is no colour specified for women, but white is preferred instead of black because black is a heat-absorbent colour.
Remember these points while you are preparing for Umrah package 2023. Women should care about their privacy and don’t show off during Umrah.
Note: Don’t go on Umrah with one piece of Ihram, pack two or three Ihram clothes with your luggage. The white dress of the Ihram is obligatory for men, but women also have the option of other colours as opposed to a white dress.
